Uzbekistan Travel Tips: Visa, Trains & Airport

Before you fly to Uzbekistan, three things decide how smoothly your first days go: whether you need a visa, how you book Afrosiyob train tickets, and how you get from Tashkent airport to the city. These Uzbekistan travel tips come from official sources and from questions we answer every week at our Tashkent desk.

Do you need a visa for Uzbekistan?

Not for many passports. Citizens of the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the US, Canada and Australia, among others, can stay up to 30 days visa-free. Many other nationalities can apply for an e-visa at e-visa.gov.uz.

For many passports, including those of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Türkiye, Canada, Australia and the United States, the visa-free stay is up to 30 days. Citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman are listed for up to 10 days. Citizens of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine have no set limit, and citizens of Kyrgyzstan can stay up to 60 days.

If your country isn't on that list, the same ministry page explains which nationalities can apply for an electronic visa through e-visa.gov.uz. Travelling on an Indian passport? See our guide to Uzbekistan's visa-free entry for Indian citizens.

How are the 30 visa-free days counted?

From the moment you cross the border. When the 30 days end you must leave the country, and a longer stay needs a visa.

If you need to stay longer, you have to apply for one of the entry visa categories. Children under 16 travelling with their legal representative and holding a biometric travel document can stay as long as the accompanying adult, up to 90 days from arrival.

Rules change, so check the ministry page shortly before you book flights. Our own travel advice says the same, and our Tashkent desk can check your nationality with you on WhatsApp.

How do you buy Afrosiyob train tickets online? What if Afrosiab train tickets are not available?

On the official Uzbekistan Railways e-ticket site. Choose your stations, date, train, class and seat, enter the details of the passport you'll travel with, and pay within 15 minutes.

You choose your stations and date, pick a train and class, then a carriage and seat, and enter your passport details. A few details are easy to miss:

  • You need to register with your name, surname and email address before you can choose seats.
  • Book on the passport you'll travel with. If your passport shows your name in both Latin and Cyrillic, fill in the Latin version.
  • You have 15 minutes to confirm and pay. After that, the order is cancelled.
  • Visa, Mastercard, Mir, UnionPay, Google Pay and Apple Pay are accepted.
  • You'll get a 14-digit e-ticket number, and you don't need a printout for domestic journeys.

If you'd rather not handle this yourself, the Classic Uzbekistan 8 Days Tour includes Afrosiyob high-speed train tickets for Bukhara–Samarkand and Samarkand–Tashkent. Also, if you see "sold out" section, don't worry, you can always ask us and we can check on our B2B panel and find some tickets for you.

How do you get from Tashkent airport to the city centre?

The airport is about 8 km south of the centre, a 15–25 minute drive. Our private transfer driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a nameboard and can also take you straight to the train station.

With our Tashkent Private Airport Transfer, your driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a nameboard and tracks your flight, and up to 60 minutes of free waiting after landing is included. The transfer goes to any Tashkent address. It can also take you straight to Tashkent Northern (Central) Station for an Afrosiyob train to Samarkand or Bukhara. It's available in English, Russian and Turkish, for up to 3 guests.

When does a private tour make sense?

When you're a family or small group, or you need a particular guide language. Every walking tour comes as an English group walk or a private walk in any of 11 languages.

Every one of our walking tours in Uzbekistan, including the Bukhara Walking Tour and the Khiva Walking Tour, comes two ways: a group walk in English, or a private walk in any of 11 languages, including German, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish.
