Traverse the crossroads of civilizations on an 8-day tour through Uzbekistan’s legendary Silk Road oases. Designed to combine historic depth with modern comfort, this trip covers the country’s most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage sites, majestic madrasahs, and lively bazaars. You will begin in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, before taking an internal flight west to Khiva, an intact walled citadel that feels frozen in time. Journey across the dramatic landscapes of the Kyzylkum Desert to reach Bukhara, a holy city renowned for its ancient trading domes and Islamic scholarship. Finish your adventure in Samarkand—the crown jewel of Tamerlane’s empire—before returning to Tashkent via the high-speed Afrosiyob train.
Things to do
Half-day and full-day experiences in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and the Chimgan mountains.
Sun, science and mountain air. This private day trip takes you into the Parkent district of Tashkent Province, where solar science and the green foothills of the Chimgan Mountains sit side by side. We pick you up from your Tashkent hotel at 10:00, and your guide and driver look after only your group all day. The Physics-Sun Heliocomplex. The first stop is the Physics-Sun Heliocomplex and its solar furnace, a research centre devoted to solar energy technology. Your guide explains how the site works and how Uzbekistan is exploring renewable energy, with time to walk around and take photos. Village life in Kumushkon. Next we visit Kumushkon, an eco-tourism village set against the mountains, and its local mosque. It is a short, gentle stop that shows how people live in the Parkent foothills, and a good moment for photos and questions. Forest and waterfall at Sukok. The longest stop of the day is Sukok, a recreational area of pine, oak and juniper forest in the Chimgan Mountains. You have about an hour and a half for walking in the cool shade and visiting the small waterfall, before the drive back to Tashkent. Good to know. The price includes hotel pickup and drop-off, transport, a professional guide and all taxes; entrance tickets and meals are not included. Families are welcome. Expect a fair amount of walking, so bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water in a reusable bottle; plastic bottles and smoking are not allowed. Not suitable for wheelchair users.
Old Tashkent, new Tashkent. This full day shows you Tashkent the way locals live it: a madrasah, the city's great bazaar, a plov lunch, the metro, a museum of crafts and a modern park. We pick you up from your hotel at 09:00, and your guide links each stop into one story about the city. Kukaldash and Chorsu. We start at the Kukaldash Madrasah, built in the 16th century under the Shaybanid dynasty as a school of Islamic learning, with lofty arches and fine tilework. Next door is Chorsu Bazaar, under its turquoise dome: an hour among spices, fresh produce, bread and crafts, with your guide explaining the local food traditions. Plov at Besh Qozon. Lunch is at Besh Qozon, a plov centre where you see how Uzbekistan's national dish is cooked in huge cauldrons and taste different kinds of plov. Food and drinks are included in the price, so just come hungry. Metro, crafts and Magic City. After lunch we head underground to the Tashkent Metro, known for stations decorated with mosaics, chandeliers and sculptures, such as Alisher Navoi and Kosmonavtlar. At the Museum of Applied Arts you see more than 50 kinds of traditional craft, and the day ends at Magic City Park, with its fairy-tale castle. Good to know. Hotel pickup and drop-off, a professional guide, transport between stops, food and drinks and all taxes are included. Expect moderate walking: wear comfortable shoes and bring a sun hat, sunscreen, water and a camera. Smoking is not allowed. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.
Your own car to Samarkand. At 07:00 your guide and driver pick you up from your Tashkent hotel in a comfortable private car, and the road to Samarkand takes about four and a half hours. It is the easiest way to see Samarkand in a day: no timetables, no shared seats, and stops whenever you need them. Timur, Registan and a taste of Samarkand. The day starts at the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, where Amir Temur is buried beneath a great ribbed dome. Then comes Registan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its three tiled madrasahs. Lunch with drinks follows at a local restaurant, included in the price, with regional dishes to try. Paper, stars and blue-tiled tombs. After lunch you visit the Meros paper workshop, where Samarkand paper is still made by hand in a tradition going back to the 9th and 10th centuries. Next is the Ulugh Beg Observatory, one of the city's great scientific landmarks, followed by the Shah-i-Zinda complex of tiled mausoleums. Bibi-Khanym and the bazaar. The last visits are the vast Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siab Bazaar, one of Samarkand's oldest markets, for dried fruit, spices and everyday life. Dinner with drinks is also included, and then your driver takes you back to your Tashkent hotel at the end of a full day of about 13 hours. Good to know. Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, the private car, a licensed guide, entrance tickets, lunch and dinner with drinks. Expect a moderate amount of walking, bring a hat and sunscreen or a jacket depending on the weather, and carry some Uzbek som for personal spending, as not every place takes cards. Not suitable for wheelchair users.
Samarkand in a single day. If your trip is short but Samarkand is on your list, this day is for you. We pick you up from your Tashkent hotel and take you to the intercity bus, which leaves at 09:00 for the roughly four-hour ride to Samarkand. Sit back and watch the countryside go by. Lunch, then Timur's tomb. In Samarkand your licensed guide meets you and takes you to a local restaurant for lunch (paid on the spot). Then the walking tour begins at the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, the resting place of Amir Temur and a masterpiece of Timurid architecture. Registan and Bibi-Khanym. Next comes Registan Square, Samarkand's great set piece, framed by three tiled madrasahs. Your guide brings the square's history to life, then leads you on to the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once among the largest mosques in the Islamic world. Bazaar and blue-tiled tombs. At Siab Bazaar you have time to look around, shop and try dried fruit or local snacks. The last visit is Shah-i-Zinda, a street of mausoleums covered in blue tiles. After dinner at a local restaurant (paid on the spot), the bus takes you back, and we drop you at your Tashkent hotel late at night. Good to know. Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, the return bus, your licensed guide, the walking tour and taxes. Lunch, dinner and entrance fees are extra, paid on the day. After booking we need your passport details to reserve your bus seat; WhatsApp is the fastest way to send them. Not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.
A whole day inside the walls. We collect you from your hotel in Khiva at 09:00 and spend the day in and around Itchan Kala, the walled old town. It is a private tour, so your guide follows your pace, and an hour at the start is spent simply getting your bearings among the walls, gates and minarets. Where the khans ruled. At the Kunya Ark, built in the 17th century as the khans' residence and seat of government, you see where Khiva was ruled. Nearby are the Sayeed Alauddin Mausoleum, honouring a 14th-century Sufi scholar, and the small Oq Masjid, the White Mosque, from the 18th century. A forest of wooden columns. The Juma Mosque is one of Khiva's great surprises: a prayer hall held up by rows of carved wooden columns, on a site used for worship for over a thousand years. From there we move on to the 19th-century Allakulikhan Madrasah and the Tosh-Khovli Palace, the "Stone House", built in the 1830s. Saints, wrestlers and the tallest minaret. The day ends at the Pakhlavon Makhmud Mausoleum, resting place of a revered Sufi saint, poet and wrestler, and at the Islom Khoja complex, whose slender minaret is one of the symbols of Khiva. Along the way you also share a meal of Uzbek dishes, included in the price. Good to know. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Khiva, a professional guide, admission tickets, food and drinks and all taxes are included. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a sun hat, sunscreen and water. Smoking and flash photography are not allowed. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.
Tashkent after dark, just for you. At 18:30 your guide and driver collect you from your hotel in a comfortable private car. This is a private tour, so the evening moves at your pace: linger where the lights are best, skip what you have already seen, and ask as many questions as you like. Domes and courtyards under the lights. We start at the Center of Islamic Civilization, where the great dome and tiled portals glow against the night sky, then continue to Hazrati Imam, the spiritual heart of old Tashkent, for a quiet walk around the square. Old streets and city landmarks. Next we stroll along Zarkaynar Street, known for its traditional-style houses, before driving past the illuminated Tashkent TV Tower. In the centre you walk around Amir Timur Square and along Sayilgoh Street, where the city comes out for its evening walk. Lights, fountains and dinner at Magic City. The evening ends at Magic City Park, with its fairy-tale buildings, colourful lights and musical fountain shows. Here you sit down to a dinner of local dishes, which is included in the price, and have time for a gentle walk before your driver takes you back to your hotel. Good to know. The tour lasts about four hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a professional guide, the private car, fuel, dinner with drinks and all taxes. For the stop at Hazrati Imam we suggest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Comfortable shoes help, as several stops are on foot.

April–June and September–October are the best months for Silk Road cities (Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva): mild days for courtyards and bazaars. June–September suits Issyk-Kul, the Fann Mountains, and the Pamir Highway. Darvaza is possible year-round, but winter nights are extreme and we kit the camp accordingly. July–August is very hot in Khiva and Bukhara.
