About this activity

Your own car to Samarkand. At 07:00 your guide and driver pick you up from your Tashkent hotel in a comfortable private car, and the road to Samarkand takes about four and a half hours. It is the easiest way to see Samarkand in a day: no timetables, no shared seats, and stops whenever you need them.

Timur, Registan and a taste of Samarkand. The day starts at the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, where Amir Temur is buried beneath a great ribbed dome. Then comes Registan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its three tiled madrasahs. Lunch with drinks follows at a local restaurant, included in the price, with regional dishes to try.

Paper, stars and blue-tiled tombs. After lunch you visit the Meros paper workshop, where Samarkand paper is still made by hand in a tradition going back to the 9th and 10th centuries. Next is the Ulugh Beg Observatory, one of the city's great scientific landmarks, followed by the Shah-i-Zinda complex of tiled mausoleums.

Bibi-Khanym and the bazaar. The last visits are the vast Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siab Bazaar, one of Samarkand's oldest markets, for dried fruit, spices and everyday life. Dinner with drinks is also included, and then your driver takes you back to your Tashkent hotel at the end of a full day of about 13 hours.

Good to know. Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, the private car, a licensed guide, entrance tickets, lunch and dinner with drinks. Expect a moderate amount of walking, bring a hat and sunscreen or a jacket depending on the weather, and carry some Uzbek som for personal spending, as not every place takes cards. Not suitable for wheelchair users.

Practical answers for this day tour. For visas and trains, see travel advice on the homepage.

The drive takes about four and a half hours each way in a comfortable private car, which is why the day starts with a 07:00 hotel pickup and lasts about 13 hours in total. Because the car is yours, we can stop for a coffee, a stretch or photos along the way.

The price covers hotel pickup and drop-off in Tashkent, the private car with driver, a licensed guide, entrance tickets to all the sites, transport between stops, and lunch and dinner, each a full meal with drinks. You only need money for personal spending, such as souvenirs at the bazaar, and optional tips.

You visit the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, Registan Square, the Meros paper workshop, the Ulugh Beg Observatory, the Shah-i-Zinda complex, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siab Bazaar. Lunch at a local restaurant comes after Registan. As the tour is private, your guide can adjust the time spent at each stop.

You can book this private tour with a guide speaking English, Russian, Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Arabic, Turkish or Japanese. Choose the language when you book. If your group mixes languages, tell us in advance and we will suggest the best way to make the day work for everyone.

Expect a moderate amount of walking at each site, including some steps and uneven paving at the older monuments. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. Comfortable shoes are a must, and a water bottle helps. Between stops you rest in the car, which makes the long day much easier.

Lunch, dinner and entrance tickets are already paid for, so you only need money for personal purchases such as souvenirs, snacks or photos. Carry some Uzbek som, because not every stall or small shop takes cards, especially at Siab Bazaar. Your guide can point you to an exchange office or ATM if needed.

Plan about 13 hours at a talking pace, with photo stops. Timing is a guide — we adjust for traffic and opening hours.
